Feel like 13, once again

Påskkärringar (easter witches)

We painted our eye brows really dark, red circles on our cheeks, and freckles all over our faces. We wore head cloths, really ugly (and old) skirts, some odd pullovers or some cloth wrapped around us, and rubber boots or clogs. Layer upon layer of old and shabby clothes. The important thing was to look really ugly! And, of course, everyone had her broom. How else should a witch fly to Blåkulla and meet the other easter witches?

Our parents would drive us to our neighbours. All of them were or had been peasants, most of them were of the same age as my grand parents, but looked elder. They gave us sweets and some money, usually 5 crowns or so. We collected the gifts in our baskets. When we came home, my sister and I shared the sweets (and money) fair, or sisterly.

That’s what I used to do on Maundy Thursday, years ago.

Look here for a really great witch made out of lace! If you understand swedish, go to this blog and read about påskkärringar.
